How to Stay Safe: Travelling

Stay safe travelling

Travelling can be an exciting adventure, but it's important to prioritise safety while exploring new places. Here are some tips to help you stay safe while travelling:

  1. Research your destination: Before you go, do some research on the location you'll be visiting. Look up any safety concerns or travel advisories to stay informed.

  2. Keep your valuables close: Carry your important documents, such as your passport and ID, in a secure and easily accessible location, such as a travel pouch. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.

  3. Stay aware of your surroundings: Be mindful of your surroundings and the people around you. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation.

  4. Use reliable transportation: Stick to safe and reliable transportation options, such as pre-booked, reputable taxis, marshalled taxi ranks or ride-sharing services. Avoid using unmarked or unlicensed vehicles.

  5. Stay in touch: Let someone know your travel plans and keep in touch with them throughout your trip. Consider using a GPS tracker or safety app to stay connected.

  6. Look into safety products: There are products available to help keep you safe, from personal alarms to door jammers for hotel rooms (see more on our Safety Resources page). We recommend choosing products which have achieved Secured by Design's Police Preferred Specification.

  7. Parking: If driving, park in a well-lit car park close to well-lit paths, with CCTV. Research police accredited car parks which carry the Park Mark accreditation - a scheme to recognise safer car parks which have met higher standards of security.

By following these tips, you can help ensure you stay safe travelling and have a more enjoyable travel experience.
