How to Stay Safe: Running
Stay safe running
Running is a great way to stay fit and healthy, but it's important to stay safe while doing so. Here are some tips for staying safe while out running:
- Plan your route ahead of time and let someone know where you're going. This way, if anything happens, someone will know where to look for you.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially if running at night. This will make you more visible to drivers and other pedestrians.
- Avoid isolated areas and stick to well-lit, populated routes. Stay clear of alleyways and other less visible spaces where possible. This will reduce the risk of encountering issues.
- Carry identification and a phone with you in case of emergency. Ensure your battery is charged!
- Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. This may mean foregoing listening to music on your run so that you can pay attention to noises around you.
- Trust your instincts and avoid any situations that make you feel uncomfortable.
- Consider running with a partner or group for added safety. This is especially helpful if you are running in a new area.
- Change up your running schedule from time to time, including when and where you run. This will make it more difficult for anyone to anticipate your movements.
- Look into personal safety products, such as alarms (see more on our Safety Resources page).
- Locate safe spaces along your route using the WalkSafe app and Licensing SAVI’s Find a Venue
By following these tips, you can stay safe running and enjoy your run more confidently.
