Huddersfield’s The Crown Hotel renews Licensing SAVI accreditation with 5-star award

- News

Huddersfield venue The Crown Hotel has displayed its ongoing commitment to staff and customer safety by renewing its National Policing Award for Safety after a successful year.

The Crown Hotel, part of the Stonegate Group, reviewed their safety policies and procedures to ensure standards continue to be met, improving the safety and security of its premises for the benefit of staff, customers, and the local community.

Available as an on-line self-assessment, Licensing Security & Vulnerability Initiative (Licensing SAVI) brings together all the information that licensed premises need to comply, achieve a star-rating and have the opportunity to apply for Licensing SAVI accreditation and an award.

The Crown Hotel was the first in West Yorkshire to receive the award as part of a pioneering partnership between Licensing SAVI, West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit and West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership. They have since been joined by numerous other licensed venues across the county.

Victoria Booth, manager of The Crown Hotel said: “I’m delighted that we have achieved Licensing SAVI accreditation for a second year, achieving a higher score and showing improvement with a full 5 stars. The self-assessment has been improved since last year and I found it much easier to use, with free templates and guides to support me which are really helpful.  We are absolutely committed to creating a safe place for everyone to enjoy and are delighted to receive this award for our efforts.”

Mark Morgan, Business Manager, Licensing SAVI, commented “We’re really pleased that The Crown Hotel has joined us for a second year and have achieved a 5 star award to reflect all the hard work from Victoria and her team.  We’re also pleased to receive the feedback that our content is helpful as we’re absolutely committed to supporting the hospitality industry to maximise the safety of their premises and for all who spend time at or near them. Well done, Victoria!”

Licensing SAVI was developed at the request of the Home Office by Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (Police CPI), which works alongside the Police Service to deter and reduce crime. As well as encouraging safer and more secure venues for managers, staff, customers, and local communities, it also seeks to reduce demand on Police Forces, NHS Ambulance Services and Accident & Emergency Departments.

The initiative is being funded by the West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), which seeks to tackle violent crime and the underlying causes of violent crime through early intervention, prevention, and education by working closely with key partner organisations including health, police, local government, education, youth justice, prisons, probation and community groups.

West Yorkshire VRU

Chief Superintendent Jackie Marsh, Director of the West Yorkshire VRU, added: “It continues to demonstrate the huge appetite for partnership working right across our night-time economy, ensuring that we have consistent standards of safety.

“Venues realise the benefit of being part of the initiatives we have funded, and this translates to those enjoying our amazing cities.”

A YouGov survey of 5,050 adults aged 18-45 in England and Wales commissioned by Police CPI found that 79% of adults agreed with the statement that ‘recent publicity around the safety of women and girls has made it more important for licensed premises to improve their safety procedures’.

The research also found that support for improved safety in venues is greatest among women – with 83% of women wanting improved safety in nightclubs compared to 75% of men; and 81% of women wanting safer bars and pubs compared to 70% of men.

Licensing SAVI covers critical issues like responsible drinking, drugs misuse, violent behaviour and safeguarding vulnerable customers through to preventing opportunist theft and improving physical security, such as lighting and CCTV.

Most measures included in Licensing SAVI can be introduced quickly and at little or no cost.

The first police award of its kind, Licensing SAVI aims to support the licensing trade and is backed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and Project Servator, a police-led vigilance scheme to deter terrorist attacks at crowded-places.
